Artist's Comments

"Faith" is the first instalment in my latest series, "Seven Heavenly Virtues, Seven Deadly Sins." (see my journal)

I felt this piece for me was simplistic, yet elegant, with the minimalist composition bringing emphasis to the symbol of the cross, and what that would entail for Christians.

Note: Please, no religion bashing, I'm not interested in discussing my faith, so don't ask. Or bash. Or you shall be bashed.

Outstanding lighting which not only creates a balanced, harmonious composition, but perhaps acts as a catalyst for a few interpretations of the image.

The first and most obvious is simply the graceful capture of a symbol of ones faith.

But a closer look at the lighting combined with the hand positions can be read very differently. To put it in very simple terms, there is a light side and a dark side to this photo. (Thank you Captain Obvious). The interest comes in with the hands - although they are centred horizontally, the asymmetrical alignment can indeed suggest that the 'dark side' (no Star Wars references intended) has the 'upper hand' (bear with the clichés, I swear I have a point!) The hand on the lighter side, although notably lower, is favoured by the cross. <<Insert random Bible quote about "The meek shall inherit the earth">>

The twists in the chain on the 'dark side' versus the purity of the catenary curve on the 'light side' also make for an interesting interpretation.

All in all, it can either be viewed as a really subtle image portraying the battle of good and evil (much like our little quest for that little planet o' earth!), or it can be admired for the sheer aesthetic beauty, regardless of any religious symbolism.

My ONLY suggestion/criticism would be to have a tinnnnnnnny bit more space above the ‘dark side’ hand, just to give the image balance vertically. :)

The lighting on this is absolutely wonderful. The lighting sets your mood & makes it so calm. This is extremely beautiful. I really really really love it sweets.

Wonderful photograph.
You have a very great lighting with two powerful symbols in the cross and the hand.
Love the shape between the hands.
Wow!

Very very very awesome but one thing id like to say. Try to follow the rules of 3rds. One is that you should try as little as possible to have ur image in the center :smooch:

Very nicely done. I like the composition but maybe a forelight would have helped to illuminate the cross? Although I do like the sillouhette effect,

Wonderfully thematic in its composition. The right hand, held higher, shields the cross from darkness while beckoning it with the combined effort of the left hand towards what spare lighting is available. Faith is portrayed perfectly as a personal choice, what with its being guided by said hands, all the while clearly being held high by them; you've shown very clearly the significance of faith to those who have any degree of it. Very well-done, overall.
